- Where: a 4* hotel in the Lido hotel zone in Funchal, about 2.5 km from the centre and about 500 m from the beach.
- My verdict: I spent a week here with TUI in February 2026. A very pleasant, fairly quiet hotel, and quite spacious for a hotel, with a balcony room looking out over Funchal and even a slice of the ocean, plus tasty breakfasts. It’s a bit far from the centre, but still bearable. I’d happily go back.
- Pools: an outdoor freshwater pool, a heated indoor pool and a children’s paddling pool. In winter the indoor pool comes in handy.
- The area: good Italian restaurants, and right next door the terraced Jardim Panorâmico park with ocean views.
- Pets: the hotel doesn’t accept them.
Alto Lido is the hotel where I spent a week with TUI in February 2026. I was happy with it, although I didn’t spend much time there: I was out and about most of the day, and when I was in, I was writing my Polish guide, madera-online.pl, from the bed. Below are my impressions and the key facts about the hotel, to make your decision easier.

Where is Alto Lido?
The hotel is in the Lido hotel zone, west of Funchal’s centre. It’s about 2.5 km to the centre and about 500 m to the beach, and the drive from the airport takes about 50 minutes. For me the centre of Funchal was a bit far, but still bearable. Bolt drivers sometimes struggled to get to the hotel entrance, so leave yourself a little extra time. I’ve covered what to see in the city itself in my Funchal guide, and how to get there from the airport in Madeira airport.
There are good Italian restaurants nearby, and right next to the hotel is a brilliant terraced park, the Jardim Panorâmico (Panoramic Garden). It’s a garden of terraces with cacti and ocean views that steps down from Estrada Monumental to the seafront promenade.
Pools, terrace and spa
What I remember most is the view from the pool, because it sits on the roof of the lower building. The hotel has three pools: an outdoor freshwater pool, a heated indoor pool and a children’s paddling pool, plus a roof terrace, a sun terrace and a garden. The paid spa area has a Finnish sauna, massages and a gym.
In winter a heated indoor pool is a big plus, because the ocean is only about 18–19°C then (more on the Madeira weather page).
My room, the noise level and breakfast
I had a double room with a balcony and a view of Funchal waking up, and even a slice of the ocean. The hotel is very pleasant, fairly quiet and quite spacious for a hotel. Some traffic noise drifted up from the street, but it didn’t really bother me.
I was on bed and breakfast, so breakfast mattered to me, and it was tasty. With TUI you can choose breakfast only, half board or full board. The hotel has 315 rooms, 21 apartments and 68 studios, and Wi-Fi is included throughout. Parking costs about €13 a day.
Who is Alto Lido for?
- people who’d rather stay in the Lido hotel zone than right in the centre and want a pool, including an indoor one,
- not for travellers with a dog: the hotel doesn’t accept pets. With a dog you could stay, for example, at ASPA Studios, where I stayed with my mixed-breed dog, or at NEXT, which according to TUI accepts dogs and cats up to 8 kg.
Would I go back to Alto Lido?
Yes, without hesitation, if I were looking for a hotel. Nothing bothered me here. When I’m not on a package trip, I choose apartments, such as ASPA Studios.
Extra costs: transfer and tourist tax
I booked my week at Alto Lido as a package with TUI. The airport transfer was a paid extra, and you pay the tourist tax (€2 per person per night in Funchal) at the hotel.
