Planning a trip to Madeira? This section is a compendium of practical know-how – from when to go and how to get around the island, through the weather, budget and accommodation, to ready-made itineraries. Madeira lies in the Atlantic Ocean, about 970 km from Lisbon and about 650–700 km off the coast of Africa (Morocco). On the island a subtropical climate awaits you, with daytime temperatures of around 25–27°C in summer and around 20°C in winter (Funchal).

Funchal’s Christmas lights from 1 December to 10 January, the Christmas market, Noite do Mercado and New Year’s Eve fireworks over the bay. Plus the weather and what’s closed over the holidays – my plan for December in Madeira.
Madeira in February: the weather (around 20°C by day), Carnival in Funchal, gardens in bloom, things to do and accommodation prices. With photos from my February trips in 2025 and 2026.
Madeira in March: around 21°C in Funchal, the coldest sea of the year and snow on Pico do Arieiro. Easter 2027, dolphins, gardens in bloom and accommodation prices – I spent March 2025 working here remotely with my dog.
Madeira in November: around 23°C by day, a 21–22°C sea and rain on 7 days on average. Festa da Castanha and St Martin’s Day, levadas, dolphin trips and accommodation prices – my very first trip was in November.
Do you need a car in Madeira? Hire prices, airport pick-up, deposit and insurance, mountain roads and parking in Funchal and on Pico do Arieiro – checked in October 2026.
Funchal, Caniço, the west coast or the north? The best areas to stay in Madeira compared: travel times, weather, whether you need a car, the tourist tax and hotels worth checking.
Since 2026 you can’t walk Madeira’s official PR trails without booking online first – and the only place to do it is the government portal Simplifica. Here’s how to book and pay, step by step.
During a month-long workation in Funchal I learned where it’s really worth shopping – and what to avoid. Madeira wine with the DOC seal, rum straight from the distillery, laurisilva honey sweets from the Honey Museum in São Vicente, a cork handbag found in a Funchal side street: none of it cost a fortune, and each has a story.
Madeira with a dog – is it even possible? Yes, if you know what to expect. I spent a month in Funchal with Tesla and tested it all: flying with a dog in the cabin, pet-friendly places to stay, dog-friendly parks and trails, rules in restaurants and on buses, and where to find an emergency vet.
Funchal airport has a reputation as one of the most difficult in the world – and in 1977 it earned it twice over: two crashes, 167 victims and a runway pilots had cursed since it opened. Today it’s a different story: the runway stands on 180 concrete pillars above the ocean, and the landing has become one of the most filmed aviation views online.
Madeira in a nutshell: how to get there, when to go, what it costs, what to do and how to get around. A guide for anyone planning a first trip to the island of eternal spring.
