Hiking trails

The official list of IFCN (Madeira’s Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation) covers 39 PR walking trails in Madeira, including variants (as of 2 October 2026). In this category I describe individual routes: distance, walking time, difficulty, getting there, tickets and practical tips. Before you set off, check the trail status, because IFCN closes routes after downpours and landslides.

Madeira’s trails are levadas, almost flat paths along irrigation channels, and veredas, mountain paths with climbs, such as the PR1 from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. I explain what a levada is and which one to choose in my guide to levada walks in Madeira.

Since 1 January 2026 IFCN trails have required a booking in SIMplifica and a fee of €4.50 (the whole PR1: €10.50). I explain how to do it step by step in my guide to trail tickets. PR3, PR3.1, PR4 and PR23 are outside the system.

Take a torch (for the tunnels), shoes with grippy soles, a rain jacket, water and an offline map, because in many places there’s no signal.
