From cosmopolitan Funchal, home to more than 100,000 people (over 40% of the island’s population), through the fishing town of Câmara de Lobos, to the secluded Nuns’ Valley – Curral das Freiras. In this category you’ll find detailed write-ups of Madeira’s towns and villages: what to see, how to get there and how much time they deserve.
Santana and its triangular thatched houses: where they came from, where to see them, the Parque Temático (€13), the closed Rocha do Navio cable car, PR9 to Caldeirão Verde and buses from Funchal.
Seixal on Madeira’s north coast: a black-sand beach with lifeguards in summer, natural pools, the Véu da Noiva waterfall, Sercial and Verdelho wine, São Vicente, and getting there by car, bus or jeep tour.
Porto da Cruz in Madeira: the Engenhos do Norte rum distillery, Penha d’Águia, a surf beach, seawater pools and walking trails. Getting there by car and bus, checked in October 2026.
The lava pools in Porto Moniz: 2026 prices and opening hours, getting there by car and SIGA bus, the area from Seixal to the Fanal forest, and an idea for a day in Madeira’s north-west.
Most visitors treat Funchal as a base for hiking – and that’s a mistake. A 15th-century cathedral with a Mudéjar ceiling, Polish monuments in the centre, concerts in the Anglican church, an Art Deco market with azulejos and gardens you can spend a whole day in. Give Funchal at least two days – and don’t just sightsee, stay a while.
The first settlement on Madeira, a harbour full of colourful boats and the spot where Churchill set up his easel in 1950. Câmara de Lobos is a fishing town 9 km from Funchal that you can reach on foot along the ocean promenade. I didn’t expect this to be the place I’d keep coming back to.
